The final ingredient is pharmaceutical-grade nicotine, and all juice manufacturers make their product available in varying nicotine strengths. They range from ridiculous (up to 36 milligrams per milliliter—basically a Lucky Strike with the filter ripped off) all the way down to nothing at all. That’s right, zero. So what’s the point of selling a “tobacco product” with no nicotine, you ask?
4The thing is, you’ll still get a nicotine rush, so you have to rely on your body to let you know when enough is enough. The general rule of thumb is that higher nicotine concentrations should be vaped in shorter bursts than lower nicotine concentrations. If you want to start chain vaping (which happens a lot with new vapers – well, all vapers to be honest), then switch to a lower nicotine concentration.
In the wake of the study, many e-liquid companies scrambled to test their products and ease customers’ minds. But at least one company has now come under fire for not revealing the high levels of AP in some of its liquids, even though it knew about these levels for months.
A better model for the current state of vaping culture might be the niche tattoo culture, urban skating communities or motorcycle detailing shops — where logos slathered in gothic letter-print cover shop walls, where Hot Topic-style black cargo shorts live on, where men are engineers and trailblazers and women are bombshells, pin-ups and fighting fuck toys.
Five Pawns is a high-end e-liquid manufacturer based in California. The company commissioned a lab to test its liquids as early as May of 2014. But the company didn’t release any results publicly until June of this year, after a UK-based e-cigarette retailer published its own lab results on Five Pawns products. Five Pawns ordered those results taken down via a cease and desist order, and wrote on its website that those tests were “fraudulent,” publishing its own lab results instead.
Compare this to a truly negligible success rate for traditional nicotine replacement therapy like the patch and gum—upon which some pharmaceutical companies hang their hats—and it’s easy to see where the opposition comes from. Perhaps this is why the United States Food and Drug Administration is pushing legislation that will hand the reins of our industry over to Big Tobacco—those staunch guardians of public health—while putting companies like mine six feet under.
People are curious by nature. When I first started vaping around the office I got constant looks and questions. So far, Vapesox has scrubbed its website of the bikini models, and it’s looking for ways to diversify the marketing so that it’s not pigeonholing its products with the tired conventions of vaping’s limited demographic.
