Yet despite their impressive sales numbers, the vast majority of those who permanently quit smoking in favor of vaping do not use them. My store doesn’t even carry them. In fact, no vape shops do—just gas stations and convenience stores.

Mesa An electronic cigarette (e-cig or e-cigarette), personal vaporizer (PV) or electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) is a battery-powered vaporizer which simulates the feeling of smoking, but without tobacco combustion.[1] Their use is commonly called “vaping”.[2] The user automatically activates the e-cigarette by taking a puff;[3] other devices turn on by pressing a button manually.[4] They are often cylindrical, but come in many variations.

Over the last few years, manufacturers and vendors have been testing their products for these chemicals, sharing the results with consumers, and altering recipes to eliminate them. That process really ramped up towards the end of last year when researchers published a paper in Nicotine and Tobacco Research that found, of the 159 sweet and creamy flavored e-liquids tested, 74 percent had DA, AP, or both.

That said, very few carcinogenic chemicals have been found in e-cigarette vapors, and those present only appear to be in trace quantities – far less than in burning tobacco and similar or less than in recognized nicotine replacement therapies.

E-cigarettes are around 95% less harmful than traditional tobacco cigarettes, according to a new study from Britain’s Department of Health. It is the first time public health officials have asserted that vaping, though not risk-free, definitively causes less harm than smoking.

A 2012 research paper entitled Levels of selected carcinogens and toxicants in vapor from electronic cigarettes: “We found that the e-cigarette vapors contained some toxic substances. The levels of the toxicants were 9–450 times lower than in cigarette smoke and were, in many cases, comparable with trace amounts found in the reference product . . . our findings are consistent with the idea that substituting tobacco cigarettes with e-cigarettes may substantially reduce exposure to selected tobacco-specific toxicants. E-cigarettes as a harm reduction strategy among smokers unwilling to quit, warrants further study.”

When you smoke, it’s pretty obvious when you’re done. The cherry has reached the butt, and there’s no tobacco left. However, with e cigs, the battery doesn’t shrink as you’re vaping – so how are you supposed to know when you’re done? Well, there’s a few ways. You could time you’re vaping breaks and stop after 5 or 10 minutes, you could go outside with a friend who’s a smoker and go inside when they’re done, or you could just wing it and vape when you want for however long you want.

“The whole issue didn’t exist before we published our study,” said Konstantinos Farsalinos, a researcher at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Greece, and lead author of the study. “There were discussions in e-cigarette consumer forums—vapers forums—on the internet, but there was no discussion in the scientific community. So we learned a lot from vapers.”

If you want an e cig that’s more complicated than the first lunar lander, there’s a mod that’s just right for you.
